VERBAL ADVERBIALS

Another function that verbals can perform is that of adverbs. Only infinitives and present participles can function as adverbs.

Examples: We met to determine the fate of the proposed project. (to determine as adverb – why we met)
The car arrived leaking oil. (leaking as adverb – how the car arrived)
Marty is too shy to dance in public. (To dance as adverb - answers how shy Marty is)

The past participle does not usually function as an adverb.
