VERB TENSES
The Progressive (or Continuous) Tense indicates an ongoing activity in relation to a reference point in time. This indicates when progressive action or existence begins. The auxiliary to be is combined with the present participle (V-ing) of the verb.
• Past Progressive – Action/existence that continued over time in the past.
• Present Progressive – Action/existence that continues over time to the present moment and may still continue.
• Future Progressive – Action/existence that will continue over time in the future.
Past Progressive
was/were + (V-ing)
Ginger was countingonyou to bring the ranch dressing.
Scooby and Shaggy were stalking the werewolf.
Present Progressive
am/are/is + (V-ing)
I am expecting twenty guests at my party.
Twenty horses are galloping across the wheat field.
Stephanie is basking in the glow of a recent promotion.
Future Progressive
will be + (V-ing)
After graduation, the students will be celebrating with wild abandon.
